LOOKING FOR DEMOCRACY SHORT FILM CONTEST
Deadline: September 2
The Public Square at the Illinois Humanities Council, Independent Television Service (ITVS), Independent Lens, Kartemquin Films, IFP/Chicago, and the Columbia College Television Department present...
Looking for Democracy Short Film Contest
Now is your chance to show what democracy means to you in our Looking for Democracy Short Film Contest. Any genre is fair game: documentary, narrative, experimental, music video. We encourage filmmakers to unleash their radical imaginations and look for democracy in creative and unusual places. Can you find democracy where you might least expect it?
As the 2008 presidential election heads into its final months, democracy is at the forefront of everyone's mind. But democracy is defined by more than just electoral politics. Where do you find democracy in your life? Can you find it in your school, church, union, community, or a professional or sports association? How do you see democracy functioning locally, nationally, and globally?
All videos cannot be more than five minutes and must be submitted by Tuesday, September 2, 2008.
For more information, please contact Maggie Berndt at The Public Square at the Illinois Humanities Council at 312.422.5585 x239 or mkb@prairie.org or visit www.prairie.org/DemocracyFilmContest .
PRIZES:
* Finalists: All finalists will be offered free membership in IFP/Chicago and acknowledged publicly.
* Winners: In addition to the above, select winners will be posted to Independent Lens' Vote Democracy website and the filmmaker (or filmmaking team) will receive one Flip camera. As part of The Public Square at the Illinois Humanities Council's Civic Cinema series, winning films will be presented in a special program in October at Columbia College Chicago's Film Row Cinema. Films will serve as a springboard for discussion about issues related to democracy this presidential electionseason and beyond.
* Grand prize: One grand prize winner will receive the above prizes, as well as a private consultation with Gordon Quinn (award-winning filmmaker and president and founding member of Kartemquin Films) and have their film shown at the ITVS Community Screening of Chicago Ten on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Chicago Cultural Center.

When: Friday, August 8, 2008
Where: Facets Multi-Media, 1517 W. Fullerton Ave. Chicago IL 60614

There aren't a lot of public forums where young people can screen their films and talk about them with their peers," said Nicole Dreiske, the Director of Children's Programming. "It's important for these young filmmakers to have a real dialogue with an audience and share their vision."
Youth filmmakers who submit their work must be present at the screening in order to fuel a discussion about the film. At the end of the Open Screen, the audience will vote for their favorite film. The winner will receive $150 worth of DVDs of their choice from Facets Multi-Media.
"Our youth have so much to say, creativity to share, and ideas to discuss," said Milos Stehlik, Director of Facets Multi- Media. "We just need to provide them with the opportunities to network. The Open Screen - Late Night Show at Facets is one of those rare venues that can change a filmmaker's life."
Film submissions should be five to fifteen minutes long in NTSC VHS or DVD formats. |

FLEX, the Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival, is now accepting submissions for its third biennial competitive festival taking place February 17-22, 2009 in Gainesville, FL. The exclusive focus of the festival is on experimental short media, but we encourage artists to challenge us to rethink what “experimental” means. Work may draw on documentary, animation, avant garde, underground, or other traditions—-or no traditions at all. Cash and in-kind prizes will be awarded in each of 4 categories (film/video, small/large). Previous jurors have included Craig Baldwin, Naomi Uman, Mike Plante, and Tony Gault. In addition, the festival has hosted numerous filmmakers including Jim Trainor, Leighton Pierce, Deborah Stratman, Bill Brown, Jim Finn, Robert Todd, and Scott Stark.
Entry form and guidelines available at <www.flexfest.org>. The regular entry deadline is October 1, but we encourage early submission.
No entry fee for festival alumni or for international entries.
